One of the most important features of an umbrella is that it offers protection from the rain. When it is raining hard most people don't care what color or style the umbrella is, only that they do not get wet. In many ways when I was in college to learn programming, it was kind of like I was under an umbrella. Everything felt safe and without risk. Well, some risk, I guess. Maybe I would get a B instead of an A, but effectively speaking, no risk. But now, the stakes have been raised and our skills being put to the test. It is somewhat ironic that this umbrella project will actually serve as a way for us to step away from what feels safe and open ourselves up to the watchful eye and scrutiny of others. I think to myself, what will they see when this project is all said and done? It is a little scary to think that they will most likely see all the little things I failed to see, but maybe just maybe they will gain some insight that they did not previously know.
But why this project? Why this app instead of something else? Many of the ideas presented today were fun and interesting and exciting and things I would have never thought about. I think I have an answer to the why question. No matter what field I have worked in I have always took the approach that I need to do my absolute best and try to make the company I am working at better in some way. I have literally spent hours in some cases trying to make things better for whatever company I was working for. This idea for my umbrella project came about because I see a need to make something better and provide financial visibility that is not currently available. The idea is simple to think about but maybe not quite as simple to implement. For the CFO I have in mind and possibly others, the idea is to provide daily notifications or a daily snapshot of vital financial information so they can use it to make important business decisions.
