Remote History

Remote work setups come in all shapes and sizes, from designer desks to kitchen tables. Personally, over the past 10 years, I have gone through many iterations of working remotely. Back in 2011 I worked from home for the first time and at the time it was something completely unheard of in the company I worked for. There were a few top executives that had the capability of working remotely. It was a unique situation. I needed to move away from the office and needed the capability of working from home. The company I worked for begrudgingly allowed it. Overall it was not a positive experience. I lived so far out that I could not get fast internet, so Skype calls and even saving something through the company server remotely took approximately 5x as long as being in the office. In due time I went back to the office. Personally I prefer to work in the office. I would not mind a hybrid situation where I work from home 1 or 2 days per week. At the office I felt very connected.

In 2016, I again moved away from the office but with much faster internet and a better computer, things have been significantly better and more efficient working remotely. The other thing that was starting to change then but has now changed significantly with the pandemic is the company's stance on working from home. They are much more flexible and accepting about it and now everyone has a laptop and the capability of working from home.

My wife and I both work from home so we have to be creative about how we set up workstations. At present, I have my office set up in the extra room in our house and she has her's set up in the family room. for now that works. We recently moved from a house that had many extra rooms so space was not an issue. After downsizing, space is now a premium. It is interesting. We were in the same office for a while but I am in so many meetings these days, that doesn't work all that well because it can be distracting. The other interesting thing is that she is much neater than me. Her desk always looks perfect and mine looks like a complete mess. In fact, one time when I was working in the office, my desk was so messy that an office going away card got lost in the shuffle and never made it to the person who was going away.

For me the ideal situation would be to work for a company that meets in person but allows you the flexibility to work from home one or two days per week
